What do you look for in a herd sire?

What a person desires in their herd sire generally is a weighted average of the same properties that everybody considers, but depending on your operation or what your herd is lacking of, you will weight different aspects more heavily.

1.) Composition – Today’s market likes to see long, straight, and deep cattle that are structurally sound with heavy thick frames.

2.) Disposition – Calm animals are easier to handle, train, and ultimately sell.

3.) Reproductive ability (EPD’s) – quality progeny with calving ease and a high pregnancy success rate over its herd and offspring make good producing cattle

4.) Horn – Today’s market seems to desire TTT with a mustache shape.

5.) Color – Complexity and uniqueness bring additional value.

6.) Pedigree – Consistency in an animals ancestors and progeny.

7.) Cost – Cost is always a consideration, but each year’s bull will influence your herd for the next century.
